Wowza! This weekend Nails by Natalie Rose turned 3, that’s 36 months, 1095 days or 26280 hours, you get where I’m going!! I’m not quite sure how it happened; I know I’m getting old myself as I keep wondering where the year is going, April already??!!
For those of you who don’t know the story, here is how I got here….10(ish) years ago I graduated from college in all things beauty, I worked in some lovely spas and salons and my most recent job was at Ted’s Beauty Spot in Cheapside, London. It was there I specialised in Shellac manicures and LOVED doing just nails, here’s where is gets crazy.
Just over three years ago a close friend of mine who worked in a day spa told me that her boss wanted someone to come in and run a nail bar as a separate business to hers, kind of like a concession. The idea being that it would work for both of us as I would bring in clients for her, and she would have existing clients for me. It seemed the most natural progression for me as a nail technician, because as much as I loved the Beauty Spot and all my clients, the next step would be for me to go it alone!
After purchasing all my products, getting some more training under my belt and to-ing and fro-ing with the owner about prices, timings and all things nail related I was ready to launch Nails by Natalie Rose on Monday 8th April 2013! However on Wednesday I had a phone call from said owner telling me she wasn’t ready to hand the space over to me, wished me well and asked me to come and collect all my stuff! Needless to say, I wasn’t really happy about this turn of events, but I packed up my stuff and left. I definitely shed a tear whilst doing so. At that point I was at an interesting crossroad, I could have sold all my products and gone back to working for someone or carry on as planned and go it alone.
You know what I did!! And here I am!! Sounds all gushy and romantic but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my lovely mum and the boyf – Literally, as he’s the one who put together my website, logo, business cards and guides me in the right direction with all things social media. He is incredibly supportive as it’s not ideal that I have to work all evenings and weekends.
The last three years have been amazing! The first year I was finding feet, building my client base and getting my name out there, year two was interesting as there was an explosion of the ‘on demand beauty’ apps. I joined a few these and got to do some really fun events, plus nails at work took off in a big way. This usually involves going into offices for a few hours doing express nails for the ladies (and some men too). Year three there saw a noticeable increase in brides and bridesmaids booking me for their wedding nails and hen parties. Now as I go into my fourth year I’m super excited about all the new products, nails art styles and opportunities that London has to offer.
When starting out on this solo adventure I was worried about being lonely. Obviously, I’m talking to clients all day long but I thought I would miss having other nail techs to talk to. Fortunately, I’ve met a few along the way, some of whom I’ve done jobs together with and it’s nice to meet up and talk about nail related chat, so I don’t have to bore anyone else with it!!
So here’s to the next three years and to painting more of your fab nails! Thanks for all your support (and reading this longer than usual blog post) and I’ll see you soon for some manis, pedis, cuppas and chit-chats!!
