Small Talk Saves Lives

Last week I got to work at the Samaritans ‘Small Talk Saves Lives’ salon, set up in the middle of Kings Cross Station in conjunction with Network Rail. The purpose of the event was to encourage people in day-to-day life to make small talk and ask someone where to get a coffee from or compliment them on something they are wearing. Just that small interaction could really help someone having trouble in their life and who is having a particularly bad day. It was a great experience and I will always remember to look up and see if there is anyone in need of a kind word when I’m out and about, it could really make a difference.

I was booked alongside Lex for hair and Kim the barber, and we were all super busy from beginning to end. It was set up as a salon because when you think about small talk, you think about chatting with your nail tech, hairdresser, or barber; small talk makes people feel at ease. It was hosted by Ben, who made talking on the microphone look so easy. We were briefed that from time to time, he would come and chat with us about small talk and our clients. When the microphone came to me, my mind went blank, and for the first time in a long time, I actually couldn’t think of anything to say. How ironic!

There were also storytellers from the railway sharing how small talk really did save someone’s life. While I was painting Megan’s nails, she told me about her experience working for Scottish Rail during the COVID-19 pandemic. She mentioned receiving a message from a gentleman who raised concerns, and she instinctively knew something wasn’t right. By engaging in conversation with him, she was able to track him down and inform a colleague of his whereabouts, ultimately saving his life. The stories I heard throughout the event were incredibly emotional. The Samaritans is a truly amazing charity, and I loved being part of the Samaritans ‘Small Talk Saved Lives’ salon at Kings Cross!
