I’m writing this a month late as I’ve been so busy it totally slipped my mind! My little business is 10 years old! And wow what a 10 years it has been (if you’re a picture person I’ve picked out some of my fav pics from the blog from the last decade!)
This is how it all began….. I’d been in the beauty industry for many years before going it alone, worked in a gorgeous hotel spa called Sopwell House (can’t thank that place enough as it’s where I met my best friend Joey!) I worked in a high street salon in Cockfosters and a day spa in Swiss Cottage. My last job before going solo was at Ted’s Beauty Spot in the city. I was there for 18 months painting nails all day and really enjoyed it, although most of my salary was going on the clothes in the store (we were part of Ted Baker) and on M&S lunches!!!
I was living with Joey and at the time she worked in a day spa in Victoria, they were getting more and more requests for manicures and pedicures but the main business there were facials and massage. So Joey mentioned my name to her boss and after a few meetings, the plan was for me to rent the space at the front of the shop and set up doing nails. I was so excited at the idea of this, it was great for me as there was already a client base!
After a few days of me working there, the boss decided she didn’t want nails in the spa anymore and asked me to pack my stuff away. After a few (a lot) of tears, and speaking to my mum and Matt (my new boyfriend) I decided to go mobile! I had a few mobile clients anyway so I had a good starting off point. Matt designed a logo, and we got business cards printed, I started an Instagram and the rest as they say is history!
Being mobile is the best, but freelancers are the hardest working people on the planet (alongside parents, parenting is the toughest job by far!!). Obviously being self-employed, the more you work the more you get paid, and it’s really hard to turn down work!
Over the last 10 years, I worked for some brilliant companies that employ self-employed beauty therapists. On a job for a company called Priv I met Janine and we have become great friends and do a lot of jobs together. When I worked for Secret Spa I did Lindsay Lohans nails! I’ve done countless press days and met some really interesting people.
I started my business living in Finchley Central, moved to Balham, moved back in with my mum in Cockfosters and am now settled in Colindale, every time I moved there was the worry of being able to build my client base back up again but I’m so grateful to my clients for sticking by me and the new ones that have joined me.
A lot has happened in my personal life in the last decade too, my boyfriend who encouraged me to become self-employed became my husband, and my business wouldn’t be where it is if it wasn’t for him, he’s my biggest cheerleader and looks after this website, so when I say I could not do this without him, I mean it!
We had Charlie in 2020, just before Covid hit, so my maternity leave coincided with everyone staying at home. Everything opened up a few months after I would have planned to go back to work, but it gave all of us a few more months in our baby bubble. Then last year in July we completed our family when little Lois was born. I’m back to work but can only work evenings and weekends at the moment so my diary is booked up about 6 weeks in advance.
I’m so lucky I love what I do and I’m excited to see what the next 10 years have to come (currently manifesting a house with a garden for a nail studio!!)
A huge thank you to all my clients, over the years a lot of them have become great friends and I’m so lucky to have them all!
